Activities
IHSD encourages families to engage in activities with their children
at home to extend the learning taking place in our programs and through our
services. Parents are provided tips and resources to support such
activities, such as:
- Read books, look at books
and talk about pictures.
- Go to the library for story
hours and to check out books.
- Practice your address and
telephone number.
- Listen to a story or
adventure that your child wants to know.
- Plan an indoor game (cards,
board games, dominoes, etc.)
- Play outdoors (kickball,
throwing and catching a ball, running, climbing and jumping)
- Make something in the
kitchen together (cookies, sandwiches, salad, etc.)
- Take a trip (to the park,
train station, museum, zoo, etc.) and talk about it.
- Walk or ride the route to
and from your new school, when preparing for kindergartenl.
- Encourage and support your
child for trying something new.
- Answer questions, even
silly ones.
- Play sound and word games
in the car, on the bus or on a walk.
- Find letter and words on
signs and in the environment.
- Talk about different
colors, shapes, and sizes.
- Make up songs.
- Rhyme words.
